March 8, 2019 - Polish-French-Danish evening at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen

Karen Benedicte Busk-Jepsen (Thorvaldsen Museum), art historian, presented in her text the rich correspondence between the two artists, which was 'embellished' with Maria Szymanowska’s songs and piano pieces performed by the pianist Małgorzata Kluźniak-Celińska and the opera singer Elisabeth Zapolska.

The marble bust of the composer - sculpted by Jakub Tatarkiewicz under the direction of his master Bertel Thorvaldsen - was turned towards the stage and the audience who came particularly numerous that evening.

The sculpture - from the National Museum of Krakow - was placed facing the giant model of the Copernicus monument. Such a symbol!
Indeed, these two works were sent together from Rome to Warsaw in 1827. A copy of the Prince Józef Poniatowski Monument (in Warsaw) served as majestic backdrop of the scene ...

The date of March 8, 2019 will have made it possible to celebrate, as part of the Maria Szymanowska Year, which begins, the anniversary of the "Roman birth" of Thorvaldsen, marked by the opening in the Eternal City of his workshop, which coincides today with International Women's Day, while associating the centenary of diplomatic relations between Poland and Denmark.
